Mati City – Compostela Valley State College (CVSC), through sheer determination despite its relative infancy, showed its athletic prowess as it finished in 5th place overall during the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Regional Olympics held last January 25-28, 2017 at the Davao Oriental State College of Science and Technology (DOSCST).
Competing against other state colleges and universities in the region namely University of Southeastern Philippines (category A & B), Davao del Norte State College (DNSC), Southern Philippines Agri-Business and Marine and Aquatic School of Technology (SPAMAST), University of the Philippines-Mindanao, and host DOSCST, CVSC finished the sports extravaganza with 16 golds, 27 silvers, and 16 bronze medals.
CVSC’s female sprinters and runners dominated the Athletics competitions after coming out on top in the 4×100 and 4×400 relay, and in the 1,500m, 400m, 5,000m, and 200m dash. Meanwhile, Carl Juno Duray delivered the college’s lone gold in Taek Won Do after lording over the lightweight division. Lastly, Jay Mark Sirinoyla and Juvie Sawan grooved their way to a top podium finish as they snagged gold in the Dance Sports event.
Gold medal holders and other outstanding student athletes from the college will then represent the region in the National SCUAA competition to be held in Batangas later this year.
Furthermore, Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) regional president Dr. Jonathan A. Bayugan expressed his full support and confidence in the chances of the top athletes in the Batangas sports festivities.
