In connection with the celebration of the National Disaster Consciousness Month, first and second year students of Compostela Valley State College (CVSC) main campus yesterday took part in the Disaster Preparedness and Response with Climate Change Symposium which was held at the municipal gymnasium of Compostela.
Through the joint initiative of the local government as well as the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, students from the major academic institutions in the local including CVSC, Legacy College of Compostela, Assumption Academy of Compostela, and Bukidnon State University-Compostela campus were gathered for the vital lecture on the inevitable threats of climate change and other related topics.
Hon. Levi S. Ebdao, chair of the Sports and Youth Committee of the local government, graced the event and encouraged the audience to do what they can to help alleviate the effects of climate change and stressed the importance of soaking up the learning presented to them in the activity.
Raul P. Villocino, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Officer of Compostela Valley province, discussed the pressing issues surrounding the current phenomenon of the climate and how to respond during disasters.
The affair, with the clear intention of avoiding numerous casualties like what happened when typhoon Pablo shook the municipality, provides the students with usable information and knowledge on the causes of climate change and what to do during natural calamities.
After the lecture, the present students were also given an avenue to ask questions related to the issues discussed.
